Body Language is an original photographic image created in response to a submission call-out for the 2019 Noel Counihan Commemorative Art Award/Moreland Summer Show. The exhibition theme Language & Liberty has multiple interpretations, often conflicting depending on where we might be situated locally/globally. The starting point was a series of B/W handshake images. Given that nothing is ever ‘black and white’, I introduced elements of colour, ‘shades of grey’, that spoke of a more nuanced inclusivity, and referenced the photographic colour spectrum. It comprises 35 layers that were meticulously stitched together to create a seamless linear and geometric pattern of colour and shape. This work could be deemed even more significant because in the current COVID’19 environment, handshaking is no longer acceptable. It highlights what we’re missing as a society: physical touch.
